This is not the case. The opposite is true: morality is higher than law! Law is our human attempt to embody in rules a part of that moral sphere which is above us. We try to understand this morality, bring it down to earth, and present it in the form of law. Sometimes we are more successful, sometimes less. Sometimes we have a mere caricature of morality, but morality is always higher than law. This view must never be abandoned. We must acknowledge it with our hearts and souls.

In the 20th Century it is almost a joke in the Western world to use words like “good” and “evil.” They have become old-fashioned concepts, yet they are very real and genuine. These are concepts from a sphere which is above us. And instead of getting involved in base, petty, shortsighted political calculations and games we must recognize that a concentration of evil and tremendous force of hatred is spreading throughout the world. We must stand up against it and not hasten to give, give, give, everything that is wants to swallow.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn
Warning to the West
1975

GIFTS OF FAITH - Rochester Catholic Bookstore!

GIFTS OF FAITH
1816 2nd St. NW - across from Sargent's

Hours:Tues, Thurs, Friday 10 – 6
Wed 10 – 8
Sat 10 – 2

We are pleased to share with you the opening of a Catholic Bookstore that is opening in Rochester, called GIFTS OF FAITH. If I say, 'I will not mention him, or speak anymore in his name,' there is in my heart as it were a burning fire" (Jer 20:8-9.)

It seems to me that we must ultimately understand the parable of the fearful servant also from this perspective; he hid his master's money because he was afraid that he might not be able to give it all back, instead of investing the money, like the other servants, so that it would increase.

The "talent" that is given to us, the treasure of the truth, must not be hidden; it must be spent boldly and courageously, so that it will take effect and (to change the metaphor) permeate and renew humanity as leaven.

Today we in the West are busy burying the treasure - out of cowardice when faced with the challenge of investing it in this tumultuous period of history, and perhaps thereby losing something (which is sheer lack of faith), and also out of laziness. We bury it, because we ourselves do not want to be illuminated by it, either - because we would like to lead our own lives, untroubled by the burden of this responsibility.

But the gift of the knowledge of God, the gift of his love, which looks upon us in the wounded heart of Jesus, should urge us on, so that all the ends of the earth might see the saving power of God (Is 52:10; Ps 98:3).

Newsletters Online?!?

We have been receiving thousands...

ok, maybe hundreds...

ok, maybe a few...or none...

emails wondering when the newsletters are going to be available online again. The Queenship of Mary invites us to exercise our obedience to God in a way that results in, not submission, but likeness.

Saint Maximilian Kolbe wrote that Mary "has a right to be loved as Queen of all hearts so that through her hearts would be cleansed and themselves become immaculate, similar and like unto her own heart, and so worthy of union with God."

"A queen enjoys full power, even with regard to the king. Mary's fullness of power is expressed in her intercession for us and her mediation of graces, so that we receive all personal graces form God" (von Balthasar)

Ps 44:10 The queen stands at your right hand arrayed in cloth of gold.

Solemnity of the Assumption

Come join us at Resurrection Church tonight at 7pm for the Mass of the Assumption!

by Marcellino D'Ambrosio, Ph.D.
from Catholic Exchange

I once asked a college theology class if anyone could explain the doctrine of the Assumption. A student replied, “Yeah, that’s the teaching whereby the Catholic Church ‘assumes’ that Mary is in heaven.”

Greatest of Marian Feasts

There’s a bit more to it than that. The Church does not just “assume” that any canonized saint in is in heaven. Rather, it authoritatively declares that a person is in glory and should therefore be honored in liturgy and imitated in life. Our church calendar is filled with saints’ days.

But why a particular day for each saint? The first evidence for this goes back to 155 AD, to a bishop named Polycarp. The account of his martyrdom notes that after his execution, the faithful collected his bones, more precious than gold, and put them in a place of honor where every year they gathered to celebrate the anniversary of his death as a sort of “birthday” into eternal life. Celebrating Mass in the catacombs over the relics of the martyrs led to the practice of putting relics in the main altar of every church. Eventually saints who did not die a martyr’s death were also commemorated on their heavenly “birthday” and their relics were accorded great honor.

From very early times, August 15 has been observed as the “birthday” of our Blessed Lady. On this greatest of all Marian feasts we celebrate the greatest moment of her life — being permanently reunited with her son and sharing His glory.

Something Unique about Mary

All the saints experience the “beatific vision” upon their entry into heaven, and we celebrate this on every saint’s day. But there is something unique about Mary’s day. The Catholic Church teaches authoritatively that it is not just Mary’s soul that was admitted to God’s glory, but that at the end of her earthly life, Mary’s body as well as her soul was assumed into heaven by the loving power of God.

There is no eyewitness account of this actual event recorded in the Bible. Come to think of it, though, no one witnessed the actual resurrection of Jesus, either. The evidence was an empty tomb and eyewitness reports that the Risen Lord had appeared to them.

Interesting parallel here. There is a tomb at the foot of the Mount of Olives where ancient tradition says that Mary's body was placed. But there is nothing inside. There are no relics, as with other saints. And credible apparitions of Mary, though not recorded in the New Testament, have been recorded from the 3rd century till today.

Mary is not equal to Christ, of course. Jesus, though possessing a complete human nature, is the Eternal Word made flesh. Mary is only a creature.

But she is a unique creature, the highest of all creatures. This is not just because she was born without the handicap of original sin. Eve and Adam were born free of sin as well, but it did not stop them from sinning as soon as they had the chance. Mary instead chose, with the help of God’s grace, to preserve her God-given purity throughout the whole of her life.

No Decay, No Delay

The bodily corruption of death was not God’s original plan. It came into the world through sin, as St. Paul says “the sting of death is sin” (I Cor 15:56). So it is fitting that she who knew no sin should know no decay and no delay in enjoying the full fruits of her son’s work. It is fitting that she who stood by Christ under the Cross should stand by Him bodily at the right hand of the Father. “The Queen stands at your right hand, in gold of Ophir” (Ps 45). Enoch and Elijah, who the Old Testament says were assumed into heaven, were surely great in God’s eyes. But they do not begin to compare with the immaculate mother of His Son.

We too, one day, insofar as we accept God’s grace, will stand at His right hand. But Paul says that “all will come to life again, but each one in proper order” (I Cor 15:23). The Redeemer, of course, blazes the resurrection trail. But who is to be first among His disciples? The one who is last is first: the Lord’s humble handmaid who did no more than say yes, and kept saying yes, and whose soul magnified not herself, but the Lord.

Dr. D'Ambrosio studied under Avery Cardinal Dulles for his Ph.D. in historical theology and taught for many years at the University of Dallas. He now directs www.crossroadsinitiative.com, which offers Catholic resources for RCIA, adult faith formation, and teens, with a special emphasis on the Year of the Eucharist, the Theology of the Body, the early Church Fathers, and the sacrament of confirmation.

August 4th - The Feast of St. John Vianney

St. John Vianney, Priest (Patron of priests)

Universally known as the "Cure of Ars)," St. John Mary Vianney was ordained a priest in 1815. Three years later he was made parish priest of Ars, a remote French hamlet, where his reputation as a confessor and director of souls made him known throughout the Christian world. His life was one of extreme mortification.

Accustomed to the most severe austerities, beleaguered by swarms of penitents, and besieged by the devil, this great mystic manifested a imperturbable patience. He was a wonderworker loved by the crowds, but he retained a childlike simplicity, and he remains to this day the living image of the priest after the heart of Christ.

He heard confessions of people from all over the world for the sixteen hours each day. His life was filled with works of charity and love. It is recorded that even the staunchest of sinners were converted at his mere word. He died August 4, 1859, and was canonized May 31, 1925.

*On a personal note - when we went to World Youth Day in Germany, we went to a church where we saw St. John Vianney's heart, which is incorruptible. Powerful and amazing!

St. John Vianney, Pray for us!
Pray for holy priests and an increase to the vocation!

Young Adult Mass

Our next Young Adult Mass:
Sunday, August 20, 7:30 p.m.
Pax Christi Church (4135 18th Ave NW)

Come to the monthly Young Adult Mass, (which will hopefully grow into a weekly Mass)! Team members don't have to be present the whole time, if there are conflicts. The format is very informal, with testimonials and activities on Community, Faith, and Call to Use our Gifts. Team members are not required to give a talk. In fact, the activities are already planned, and all you have to do is show up, help set up and oversee the activities (which include building a spaghetti tower, a faith walk, and a final anointing ritual, among other things), and be an example for the teens.

We have a great time as a team, and every year the teens say that they had fun at the retreat (yes, even though it's a required part of Confirmation!). Don't underestimate your ability to help with the faith formation of teens -- they are hungry for interaction with young adults of faith who are not parents.

To help out, contact Phil Germann at rivendell@pitel.net or call at 367-2790.

Preparation for Mass

From Catholic Exchange...

Hence, our preparation for Holy Mass, like the disciples’ preparation for the Passover, must be precise and meticulous. As Jesus makes Himself present to us as a gift beyond all telling, so must we prepare ourselves to respond to His gift of self by our proper dispositions during Mass. In a consumerist society like our own, the common attitude about preparing for Mass may be, “What will I get out of it?” Instead, we should ask, “How will I offer myself to God during Mass in order to match Jesus’ love and gift of self to me?” If we prepare well for Mass, we will soon discover that as much as we think we are giving of ourselves to Jesus, He is never outdone in His generous outpouring of His very life into our own.

Fr. Go out and live the good life brothers and sisters! Thanks Nicole for the poem - visit her blog by clicking on Nicole in the links!

The Vision

by Peter Greig, www.24-7prayer.com

So this guy comes up to me and says, “What’s the vision? What’s the big idea?” I open my mouth and words come out like this…

The vision? The vision is JESUS - obsessively, dangerously, undeniably Jesus. The vision is an army of young people. You see bones? I see an army.
And they are FREE from materialism. They laugh at 9-5 little prisons.
They could eat caviar on Monday and crusts on Tuesday. They wouldn’t even notice.
They know the meaning of the Matrix, the way the West was won.
They are mobile like the wind, they belong to the nations. They need no passport. People write their addresses in pencil and wonder at their strange existence.
They are free, yet they are slaves of the hurting and dirty and dying.

What is the vision? The vision is holiness that hurts the eyes. It makes children laugh and adults angry. It gave up the game of minimum integrity long ago to reach for the stars.
It scorns the good and strains for the best. It is dangerously pure.
Light flickers from every secret motive, every private conversation.
It loves people away from their suicide leaps, their Satan games.
This is an army that will lay down its life for the cause.
A million times a day its soldiers choose to loose that they might one day win the great “Well done” of faithful sons and daughters.
Such heroes are as radical on Monday morning as Sunday night.
They don’t need fame from names. Instead they grin quietly upwards and hear the crowds chanting again and again: “COME ON!”

And this is the sound of the underground
The whisper of history in the making
Foundations shaking
Revolutionaries dreaming once again
Mystery is scheming in whispers
Conspiracy is breathing…

This is the sound of the underground
And the army is discipl(in)ed.
Young people who beat their bodies into submission.
Every soldier would take a bullet for his comrade at arms.
The tattoo on their back boasts “For me to live is Christ and to die is gain.”
Sacrifice fuels the fire of victory in their upward eyes. Winners. Martyrs. Who can stop them ? Can hormones hold them back?
Can failure succeed? Can fear scare them or death kill them?
And the generation prays like a dying man with groans beyond talking, with warrior cries, sulphuric tears and with great barrow loads of laughter!

Waiting. Watching: 24 - 7 - 365.
Whatever it takes they will give: Breaking the rules. Shaking mediocrity from its cosy little hide. Laying down their rights and their precious little wrongs, laughing at labels, fasting essentials. The advertisers cannot mold them. Hollywood cannot hold them. Peer-pressure is powerless to shake their resolve at late night parties before the cockerel cries.

They are incredibly cool, dangerously attractive inside.
On the outside? They hardly care. They wear clothes like costumes to communicate and celebrate, but never to hide.
Would they surrender their image or their popularity?
They would lay down their very lives - swap seats with the man on death row - guilty as hell. A throne for an electric chair.

With blood and sweat and many tears, with sleepless nights and fruitless days, they pray as if it all depends on God and live as if it all depends on them.

Their DNA chooses JESUS. (He breathes out, they breathe in.)
Their subconscious sings. They had a blood transfusion with Jesus.
Their words make demons scream in shopping centres.
Don’t you hear them coming?

Herald the weirdos! Summon the losers and the freaks. Here come the frightened and forgotten with fire in their eyes. They walk tall and trees applaud, skyscrapers bow, mountains are dwarfed by these children of another dimension. Their prayers summon the hounds of heaven and invoke the ancient dream of Eden.

And this vision will be. It will come to pass; it will come easily; it will come soon.

How do I know? Because this is the longing of creation itself, the groaning of the Spirit, the very dream of God. My tomorrow is his today. My distant hope is his 3D. And my feeble, whispered, faithless prayer invokes a thunderous, resounding, bone-shaking great “Amen!” from countless angels, from hero’s of the faith, from Christ himself. And he is the original dreamer, the ultimate winner.

Guaranteed.

Reading Scripture is Essential for Christian Living

I am always encouraging you to pay attention to what is said here in church, but also, when you are at home, to continue constantly in the practice of reading the divine Scriptures...For let now anyone say to me to silly, contemptible words, “I’m stuck at the courthouse all day.” “I’m tied up with political affairs.” “I’m in an apprentice program.” “I’ve got a wife.” “I’m raising kids.” “I’m responsible for a household.” “I’m a businessman.” “Reading the Bible isn’t my thing. That’s for those who are set apart, for those who have made the mountain-tops their home, who have a way of life without interruptions.”
What are you saying, man? It’s not your business to pay attention to the Bible because you are distracted by thousands of concerns? Then Bible reading belongs more to you than to the monks! For they do not make as much use of the help of divine Scriptures as those who always have a great many things to do...
But you are always standing in the line of battle and are constantly being hit, so you need more medicine. For not only does your spouse irritate you, but your son annoys you, and a servant makes you lose your temper. An enemy schemes against you, a friend envies you, a neighbor insults you, a colleague trips you up. Often a lawsuit impends, poverty distresses, loss of possessions brings sorrow. At one moment success puffs you up; at another, failure deflates you. Numerous powerful inducements to anger and anxiety, to discouragement and grief, to vanity and loss of sense surround us on every side. A thousand missiles rain down from every direction. And so we constantly need the whole range of equipment supplied by Scripture...
Since many things of this kind besiege our soul, we need the divine medicines, so that we might treat the wounds we already have, and so that we might check beforehand the wounds that are not yet, but are going to be, from afar extinguishing the missiles of the devil and repelling them through the constant reading of the divine Scriptures. For it is not possible, not possible for anyone to be saved who does not constantly have the benefit of spiritual reading.
-Saint John Chrysostom
347-407 A.D.

Come and get a Son-tan! In the many Churches that have this adoration, the Eucharist is displayed in a special holder called a monstrance, and people come to pray and worship Jesus continually throughout the day and often the night. Christ’s great love for us was shown when he was crucified on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins and give us eternal life. He loves us without limit, and offers Himself to us in the Holy sacrament of the Eucharist.

Christ in the Blessed Sacrament is the same Jesus who gave courage to His contemporaries during His visible life in Palestine. He is the same Jesus who performed miracles, not only in healing human bodies, and even raising people from the dead. He performs miracles of moral conversion and sanctification now through the Holy Eucharist, provided we believe.

One time when Blessed Mother Teresa was visiting in our country, a group of American women asked her what they could do to help her in her work. Blessed Mother Teresa replied, "The greatest help they could give her would be to spend one hour each week in silent adoration before the Blessed Sacrament".

[Fr. John A. The grace of Christ is not in the slightest way a rival of our freedom when this freedom accords with the sense of the true and the good that God has put in the human heart. On the contrary, as Christian experience attests especially in prayer, the more docile we are to the promptings of grace, the more we grow in inner freedom and confidence during trials, such as those we face in the pressures and constraints of the outer world. By the working of grace the Holy Spirit educates us in spiritual freedom in order to make us free collaborators in his work in the Church and in the world:

Almighty and merciful God,
in your goodness take away from us all that is harmful,
so that, made ready both in mind and body,
we may freely accomplish your will.

St. Francis Church Spanish CCD

What: There is a need for CCD teachers at St. Francis Church. They are trying to start a CCD program for children ages 4-6. These children all speak Spanish, but you do not need to speak Spanish to volunteer and help out. The youth minister there has also agreed to help out by gathering the information that will be used for teaching.

Why: The idea is to train the mother's of the children who would then be able to take over the CCD program themselves. They are looking for volunteers who are able to commit to some or all of the Sundays each month so the program can get started.

When: The CCD would run from noon-1pm each Sunday.

If you would like to help with this fun opportunity please email Sarah at rochesteryoungadults@yahoo.com

Use www.prolifesearch.com as search engine

GRAYCE likes this new search engine, and so does Jesus:

www.prolifesearch.com

It is powered by Google, plus it has a special filter so you get all the results you could want, minus porn or adult sites.
